was prepared for Elsevier's executable papers grand challenge.

Comment

The submission is constructed as a pastiche of document tricks which demonstrate that computational science journals could evolve gracefully, to tackle the challenge's identified issues, and there is no need to introduce seismic changes that run the risk of throwing the baby out with the bath water. Although the submission is currently an incomplete draft, it contains enough material to be considered a bona-fide executable paper, and so is being released for general comment.
